The Cups Live!

What a cupping – a self-invented and soon to be worldwide phrase – year, and how well timed!

A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far, Far Away…

It is dark times for the cups.

Without sufficient monetary incentive, managers have been fielding weaker and weaker teams in the cups, which are soon becoming training for the ‘B’ teams.

But there shines a light.

This season has seen some great ‘cupsets’, a new term which had to be invented to deal with this rush. We have seen Bradford City progress to the final of the Capital One Cup, and just last weekend we saw, MK Dons, notably Luton, Brentford, Leeds and Oldham shock the crowds.

In these times of decline, how can we reverse this mudslide?

I think the only suggestion that is really going to work, is an automatic place in the Champions League for the FA Cup winners, and a place in the Europa League for League Cup winners.

But there are issues with this. If every country implies this rule the CL and EL could become incredibly bloated; a logistical nightmare.

But ways can be found around this.

A new pre-everything cup winners group, so as not too disturb ‘big’ clubs.

Ways must be found.

Means must be made.

Viva la cup!
